Metacgognition is important to the development of higher-order thinking and problem solving, both desired in the current educational practices.
The outputs of this research are the estimates of the effect sizes of metacognitive variable on learning outcomes in computer based instruction, especially under the hypermedia learning environment. Besides this purpose, the author pointed out the weaknesses in the extant research and recommend methodological improvements.

The five out of 6 studies reported a positive effect size. Therefore, we are positive that metacognitive interventions can help students learn better in hypermedia based learning environents. Also, roughly speaking the magnitude of effct size in ill structured domains such as social studies is greater than well structured domain.
It seems that the magnitude of effect size in declarative knowledge is greater than in problem solving domain. However, since there was just one study dealing with declarative knowledge, this conclusion is dubious and thus the further study needed.
